The research is a longitudinal studie of children's development of mathematical knowledge. Its aim is to study children's reactions and results within different age and groups with special emphasis on analysing individual differences. The data has been gathered from the same children during a period of time starting with preschool running all through lower comprehensive school.A total 170 children have participated in several test situations during the years 1988-1995.Measuring instruments have been created to study the children's conception of numbers, their ability to count and their solving of word problems. The collected data will be analysed with quantitative and qualitative methods.Through error analysis and studies of interviews the thinking strategies of the children will be described.A follow-up study will be carried out during the years 1997-98, when these groups of pupils attend their last year of upper comprehensive school.
